Stroke Rehabilitation Through Engaging UX

Changing the game for healthcare technology

I had a go at healthcare technology and was hired as a UX designer and project lead, driving innovation that transcends traditional rehabilitation methods. This groundbreaking initiative not only empowers stroke patients on their journey to recovery but also streamlines the workflow for physiotherapists.

Gamification Redefined:

I spearheaded the development of a series of games designed specifically for stroke patients experiencing paralysis. The objective was clear: create an immersive user experience that not only motivated patients to train longer but also offered a cost-effective alternative to traditional physiotherapy.

Smart Training with Custom-Made Technology

Five small games, meticulously designed and managed by me, leverage a custom-made 2D scanner to read users' movements. Each game adapts its sensitivity, catering to the individual's current motor skills. The user's progress is seamlessly recorded in a centralized database, granting physiotherapists remote access to track advancements and tweak game difficulty for an optimal "flow" experience.

Dual-Focused Design

This project catered to two primary users—the physiotherapists and the patients—each with distinct needs. For patients, we applied Flow theory, crafting an experience that not only engaged them longer but also made every training session count. Simultaneously, the focus of the physiotherapist supervisor was on information architecture and intuitive progress tracking, ensuring seamless oversight without physical presence.

Efficiency Unleashed

The success story unfolds as patients find the motivation to train independently, eliminating the necessity of a physiotherapist's constant presence. The result? A significant reduction in man-hours, as therapists tracked users' motor skills remotely, transforming the very landscape of stroke rehabilitation.

A Skill Set Beyond Conventional Boundaries

This project extends beyond conventional design challenges. Designing for non-standard technologies and users with limited mobility (and occasional cognitive deficiencies) has provided me with new insight into the realm of effective UX.
